We use FRAPs to record in-game

 Machinima
There certainly are some nice ones out there. I have checked Blizzards website:

http://www.wow-europe.com/en/communi...ima/index.html

and wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machinima

yet I am left quite confused about what software is actually used to create these movies. For WoW they must have access to the models and environment of the actual game and an option to move the camera freely inside it. And animate the characters.

Do you have any further information on this subject and/or links that explain the process and software involved in more detail?

It's way beyond me, I'm amazed at most of this stuff and I love it. Maybe someone can shed some light on it?

I've heard from Telemora, of Origo Films. He told me the following:

Quote:
We use FRAPs to record in-game and the program WoW Model Viewer to get some of those special shots of characters and green screen them in. Now for some of the camera movements a private server is used where you can fly around. But most are done in WoW zooming to first person mode either with actual characters using emotes or to film backgrounds in which we Chroma Key characters and effects in.

Here are a couple links to getting started:

Here's some takes on it:

Oxhorn (some of us are familiar with his videos)

from my experiences in RL I can tell you that knowing Photoshop, Illustrator (for vector images), an NLE editor of some sort (FinalCut, Premiere, Vegas, etc) , and something like Aftereffects will make a huge difference.

There doesn't seem to be one simple standard for what everyone uses to make machinima. People tend to use what they are good at and what they have at their disposal, whether it be 3D renders , AfterEffects, etc. Some machinimists use private servers, where they can set up their shot and get some great camera angles out of it.

On a basic level: Mapviewer, Modelviewer, WoW, and a movie editting program (such as Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut Pro, etc.). There are a number of video capture options; Fraps, and Wegame.com's new in-game HD recorder (wegame.com's program is free) come to mind. If you've got something to say, and those, you can do well. You don't need to start off by blowing people away like BaronSoosdon does with his images.

Personally, I still only use Mapviewer, Modelviewer, Normal WoW servers, Photoshop, and Sony Vegas. I'm a noob, so I just do my best and hope people like what I do. =)

My suggestion for those starting out is to not get yourself too bogged down in new programs. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) and branch out as you get more familiar with what you've worked with before.

Soooo..Blizzard is walking a tight line here by endorsing machinimas, yet some creators will be using private servers that Blizzards forbids....

Are mapviever and modelviever programs that can be downloaded from Blizzard? I suppose I rather have to visit sites that host UIs and such?
